Puppets? Yes. Puppets.
#netflix
Holly Star
This movie is about an unemployed puppeteer. Need I say more? But I will. Sloan is in her 30’s who epitomes angst face. Or maybe she is constipated?
Sloan is fired from her puppeteering for commercials job and goes home to the small town where she is from. Her parents are on a cruise though so it just herself in a big lonely house.
Choice quote-
Sloan “I am having an existential crisis”
Sassy friend “That’s a nice little luxury, always good to have me time”
We meet her grandmother at the cemetery while she is pouring one out on grandpa’s grave. Sloan is driving Grandmas car one day and it stalls. She gets out, slips on ice, hits her head and has a concussion type dream that the puppets are telling her there is buried treasure in the town. Then her car is towed by the people at the Christmas tree lot, including a young man who will be her love interest. He offers her a job. She declines, mopes around town feeling sorry for herself and then accepts. Her sassy friend takes her paintballing. She taps into her inner fierce self. She decides to decipher this weird puppet dream, tries hypnosis, and tries to bring on near death experiences to dream more. She decides it is her deceased Grandpa sending her these messages so she goes on a sherlock holmes type trip to figure out what is going on. The brief foray into detective work ends in a dive bar where they tell her a story of lobstermen being conned, a sack of money, a bar fight, and the sack of money disappearing.
She hangs out with her sassy grandmother at the assisted living facility and buys them champagne and cake for Christmas Eve. She figures out the real treasure is Christmas tree lot dude. The movie ends with more puppet scenes of drunk Grandpa burying the treasure underneath the Christmas tree lot. Does it seem like this movie didn’t make sense? Cause it didn’t. For sheer originality I give this move a C+.
Christmas movies so white scale a 9.7.
Also bonus points cause it was filmed in Saco, ME. That might even push it to a B- because it is kind of local. I know I am stretching it here.
